Renewable Energy in Michigan (REM) is a non-profit organization that works to expand solar and geothermal energy in Michigan that will save you money from high utility electric rates, promote a clean environment and fight climate change.

REM is the sister organization to the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association (GLREA), an organization that educates the public about the benefits of renewable energy and works to enact policies that expand renewable energy in Michigan.

In order to expand solar and geothermal energy in Michigan, new policies must be enacted with the Michigan Legislature and the Michigan Public Service Commission.

These are very difficult undertakings, because DTE and Consumers Energy oppose these policies because they want to maintain their monopoly status and want to continue selling their very expensive utility electricity.  DTE and Consumers Energy don't want people and business to have a choice on how to purchase electricity.  We think that all people and business should have the right to be able to choose where they get their electricity from.

Michigan has the highest utility rates in the Upper Midwest!

So help us enact new policies by sending emails.

You can further help by becoming a Member of the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association (GLREA). To join click here https://www.2glrea.org/membership and then scroll down and click on the yellow ‘Become a GLREA Member’ button and then follow the directions. Dues are tax deductible because GLREA is a non-profit orgnaization.

Contact Your Legislators to Support the Clean Energy Future Plan

This is about enacting the Clean Energy Future Plan, that creates a plan for Michigan to accelerate the transition to Renewable Energy.

The Clean Energy Future Pan consists of five bills that will lay the foundation for Michigan to make the transition quicker to Renewable Energy.

  • Senate Bill 271 and House Bill 4759 will create a 60% Renewable Portfolio Standard, which means that the utiities must generate at least 60% of their electricity by 2030.
  • Senate Bill 272 and House Bill 4760 will give the Michigan Public Service Commission more authority to consider climate change, affordability of rates and public health concerns as the Commission regulates DTE and Consumers Energy.
  • Senate Bill 273 and House Bill 4761 expands the Energy Waste and Reduction program that pushes energy efficiency as a strategy to reduce energy consumption and save money on high utility bills.
  • Senate Bill 152 & 153 and House Bill 4464 & 4464 that will establish Community Solar in Michigan that will enable all people and buisness to be able to purchase solar.
  • Senate Bill 362 and 363 that would eliminate the 1% Cap on solar and restore fair compensation to solar owners for the extra solar electricity they export back to the grid for the utilities to reuse.

These bills will update Michigan's Energy laws to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels to clean renewable energy (solar, wind and geothermal), that will save money, promote better public health and fight climate change.

But we need to enact these bills into law.

These bills have been assigned to the Senate Energy and Environment Committee, Chaired by Senator Sean McCann and the House Committee on Energy, Communications and Technology, Chaired by Representative Helena Scott.

Please send an email to your State Senator and your State Representative asking them to support these bills and to urge Sen. Sean McCann and Rep. Helena Scott to hold a hearing and a vote on these bills. Thanks!
