Renewable Energy in Michigan (REM) is a non-profit organization that works to expand solar and geothermal energy in Michigan that will save you money from high utility electric rates, promote a clean environment and fight climate change.

REM is the sister organization to the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association (GLREA), an organization that educates the public about the benefits of renewable energy and works to enact policies that expand renewable energy in Michigan.

In order to expand solar and geothermal energy in Michigan, new policies must be enacted with the Michigan Legislature and the Michigan Public Service Commission.

These are very difficult undertakings, because DTE and Consumers Energy oppose these policies because they want to maintain their monopoly status and want to continue selling their very expensive utility electricity.  DTE and Consumers Energy don't want people and business to have a choice on how to purchase electricity.  We think that all people and business should have the right to be able to choose where they get their electricity from.

Michigan has the highest utility rates in the Upper Midwest!

So help us enact new policies by sending emails.

You can further help by becoming a Member of the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association (GLREA). To join click here https://www.2glrea.org/membership and then scroll down and click on the yellow ‘Become a GLREA Member’ button and then follow the directions. Dues are tax deductible because GLREA is a non-profit orgnaization.

Support the Clean Energy Future Plan

This is about enacting the Clean Energy Future Plan, which if enacted, will accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to solar and wind electricity in Michigan.

The Clean Energy Future Plan consists of three bills:

  • Senate Bill 271, creates a 50% Renewable Energy Standard, which requires that DTE, Consumers Energy and the other utiities, generate at least 50% of their electricity by 2030 from solar and wind and then 60% by 2035. Right now they are only generating about 23% from renewable energy sources. Senate Bill 271 also increases the Distributed Generation Cap to 10% so homeowners and small business will continue to have the option of installling their own solar system to save money and support a cleaner environment.
  • Senate Bill 502, gives the Michigan Public Service Commission more authority to consider climate change, environmental justice and public health concerns as the Commission reviews Integrated Resource Plans by DTE and Consumers Energy.
  • Senate Bill 273, expands the Energy Waste and Reduction program, that DTE, Consumers Energy and the other utilities must implement to weatherize residential homes, so homeowners can reduce their energy consumption and save money on high utility bills.

These bills will speed up the transition away from fossil fuels to solar, wind and geothermal energy. This will save money, promote better public health and slow down climate change.

But we need to enact these bills into law!

These bills have passed the State Senate and now are going to the Michigan House. They have been assigned to the House Energy, Communications and Technology Committee, Chaired by Representative Helena Scott.

Please send an email to your State Representative to urge him or her to support these bills. Your email will also be automatically sent to Representative Joe Tate (the Speaker of the House) and Governor Whitmer.

Please ask all your friends to send an email to their State Representative. We need to get as many people as possible to send emails.

Thank-you!
